Meet the Team!
OUR TEAM ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS... THIS KEEPS OUR ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS LOW AND MEANS THAT YOUR SUPPORT GOES DIRECTLY TO OUR BENEFICIARIES!
Tempe McMinn is ZimSEF's President. She took over this role from Amber Maiden at the end of 2017, having previously held roles on our Committee as Secretary and Vice-President since joining the team in 2011. Tempe is a Sydney-based lawyer with a background in and passion for human rights. She hopes that one day ZimSEF will no longer need to exist, but in the meantime coordinates our Education Fund and Sponsorship Program directly with our partners on the ground - YASD. Tempe has made a number of self-funded trips to Hatcliffe in Zimbabwe (you can check out some photos here) since 2012, gaining a strong understanding of the unique needs of the vulnerable and orphaned children and young adults of the Hatcliffe community and developing a close relationship with our colleagues at YASD, our beneficiaries, and their families.
Amber Maiden is ZimSEF's co-founder and current Vice-President. Amber established ZimSEF with her son James in 2009, following her introduction to members of the Zimbabwe Street Soccer Team at the 2008 Homeless Street Soccer World Cup.
In 2011, Amber travelled to Zimbabwe with her husband, consolidating her relationship with her Zimbabwean colleagues and ZimSEF partners, YASD. Since then, she has continued her commitment to fulfilling the ZimSEF goals. In her professional life, Amber worked as an Occupational Therapist for over forty years, through which she pursued her interest in health and education. Amber also has extensive administrative and business experience as a Director/Secretary of her family business for the last 25 years. Amber now spends much of her time between her home on the northern beaches, travelling to visit her three sons and their families, and working on the family farm in Tasmania.
Geoff Vanderfield is our Secretary and, along with Amber and James, is one of the longest serving members of our committee having joined us in 2009! Geoff is a senior school physical education teacher at St Aloysius College in Sydney. His students sponsor a ZimSEF beneficiary, which Geoff says helps the students to develop and engage in global awareness and understanding of other cultures. In Geoff's previous role at Cranbrook School he coordinated a number of street soccer carnivals on behalf of ZimSEF, photos of which you can check out in our gallery here.
Sally Maiden joined the ZimSEF Committee as Treasurer in 2021. She has practiced accountancy both in the USA and Australia for more years than she cares to admit. Sally has worked as a volunteer for multiple organisations, including the Red Cross Young Parents Program, the Story Factory, and of course, ZimSEF! She is particularly interested in helping young people attain an education as a means of breaking the cycle of disadvantage.
Gus Esslemont joined the ZimSEF Committee in 2013 and is ZimSEF's chief fundraiser, a role for which he is very well suited with over a decade of experience in the financial services industry. Gus is a knock about bloke who likes a beer on the weekend, and enjoys taking some time out to support those who are less fortunate.
